The gospel story involves a great deal of unexpected events. The main narrative and supporting stories are comprised of a series of plot twists from start to finish. Some have darker elements, such as Herod’s jealous rage or the danger to Mary as an unwed mother; but other surprises delight in their break from tradition. Christ’s humble birth in a stable and first welcome by lowly shepherds were doubtlessly less comfortable surprises for Mary, but she still treasured these unexpected moments in her heart.
Similarly, Zechariah’s muteness likely posed some problems for he and Elizabeth during her pregnancy. However, when Zechariah affirms John’s name – a surprise to all as it was not a family name – his voice is restored and their friends and family rejoice. Meaning “God is gracious” in Hebrew, John served as a reminder of God’s goodness and enduring love even in times of upheaval.
This season of Advent will likely hold surprises which may at first appear inconvenient, uncomfortable, or daunting. As we hold the stories of the first coming of Christ in our hearts, we can see the plot twists and turns as glimmers of the great joy to come and rest in the promise of peace. My prayer is that like Mary, Zechariah and Elizabeth, we can move forward in preparation for Christ’s coming with joy, hope, and peace.
